We’ve been hearing a lot about how fabric blocking was going to be the next big thing this fall, and that it was going to revolutionise menswear. Many, many designers gave in to this trend, for better (Bottega Veneta) and for worse (yes, we’re looking at you Walter Van Beirendonck).
Gucci, however, decided to once more stay away from the masses and do its own thing (like this season, as the majority of the menswear brands try to bend sportswear to the codes of a tailored silhouette, Gucci sidelined sportswear to embrace a streamlined and refined style.)
What is really on display in this lookbook are the coats, suit jackets and blazers, all perfectly tailored. It is nice to see that leather is experimenting a revival, with three different styles of leather jackets being offered.
Knitwear is also very present, and even if the colours and patterns are not great masterpieces of originality, they are everything one might wish for when looking to multi-layer in the winter: warm, versatile and comfortable.
Suits have regained a bit more structure, maybe recovering from a couple of season of relaxed tailoring. Classic cuts prevail for all four looks, but the shoulders remain soft and only lightly padded.
For this autumn / winter, Gucci is offering a choice of either chinos (shown mostly white in the look-book) or jeans, which are resistant, timeless and versatile. The fashion powerhouse also offers a range of leather messenger bags and handbags which demark themselves from their metrosexual counterparts in a very masculin manner.
Outerwear too is, in every sense of the word, classic: a black coat, a jumper, a shirt and a pair of jeans.
Sportswear fans will have to look elsewhere, as it seems Gucci will not be offering new sport attires as of this fall.
In conclusion, we can say that even though this collection is not as daring as the spring/summer 2012 one, it ticks every box for a winter success: warm, comfortable and above all, easy on the eye.
