My mother always donned big, round sunglasses. I loved the way they fitted perfectly with her round, bubbled face. The deep, amber-brown color of the frames matched the dark brown curls that enclosed her face, making her pale skin luminous, her smile more palpable. It is amazing what simple shades can do to one’s features.
The mystery sunglasses conveyed always mesmerized me. With them you were an enigma, a cool, collected gal of perplexity. I would put on my mother’s sunglasses in an attempt to capture some of that rapture, but they would simply fall off my skinny, child’s face and dangle from my ear lobes.
Now I am old enough to possess my own pair of shades, ones that compliment the shape of my face: large and boxy for my long and oval. Over the years, I have learned the many suitable frame styles that go with the appropriate face types: narrow and bottom-heavy for the heart-shaped faces, round and butterfly-shaped for the squared, angular and geometric for those that are round.
Sunglasses are always a popular item for summer, yet their styles and trends change with every year. They are much needed for protection from the fierce sun, but also add flare to any look. Without a doubt, sunglasses are equally a necessity and an accessory.
A Necessity
The sun’s UV rays cause both short and long-term damage to the eyes. Sunburn can appear on the delicate skin surrounding the eyes. Worst of the sun’s brutal effects are eye diseases like ophthalmohelioses, which includes cataracts, damage to the retina and macular degeneration. Make sure to check for the sticker that states both UV-A and UV-B protection between 99 and 100 percent when shopping for shades. Anything less will not block the sun. Also, the bigger the sunglasses the better protection they offer. Larger lenses help block out more sunlight than those that are smaller.
An Accessory
It looks like there are two big trends this summer: that of bright colors and eccentric frames.
Vibrant eyewear in colors such as vivid pinks, bright yellows, tangerine, red and neon green are hot additions to any look. They introduce flair to a casual day outfit and offer an easy way to make your wardrobe more fashionable. Plus, there are many colors and styles to choose from. So you can find that pair that not only flatters your face but your personality as well.
Large sunglasses with funky frames are also very in this summer. They elicit a retro vibe, adding a quirky touch to an outfit. Take a look at Warby Parker x Standard sunglasses. The leveled brow line contrasts with the soft angles of the lower bottom-half of these polarized green lenses, creating a bold 21stcentury look.
