Salvatore Ferragamo SS13 Collection
Every so often, a collection hits the runaway that overshadows all others. Ferragamo’s spring/sumer 2013 collection is one of those. Building on this year’s ever growing fascination with the use of colour, every single piece in this collection reinvents the idea of colour blocking.
Moving from searing oranges and reds mixed with astounding blues and teals to bold, fresh creams and whites – not to mention the banana yellow suit that epitomises the daring ethos of the collection, with a near-blinding hue as well as its forward thinking re-introduction of a contemporary double breast.
The variety of colour and shades is mirrored in the extensive variety of cut and shape. Slim line tailoring is chopped between wide fitting macs and overcoats that still managed to hug the waist, creating a neat yet masculine silhouette.
But what really sets these pieces apart from the rest is the vague definition between smart and casual, the coalition between sports shoes and tailored trousers, between handkerchiefs and t-shirts or sports jackets and tie-dye. Each runway look depicts the idea that colour can be both fashion forward and practical, whether it be simply shaped knitwear made of translucent fabrics, or classic shaped raincoats with modern and outrageously contrasting colours and trim.
Very few collections so concisely and directly address a mood and vibe like this, and so rarely does an experimental collection, especially in menswear, turn out to be so wearable. Whether or not you end up walking to work in a mint green blazer twinned with salmon trousers any time soon, it is safe to say that striking colour will be a staple in every man’s wardrobe next year, and that this collection has a huge part to play in that.
Furthermore, and maybe more importantly, judging by the grey, miserable backdrop our summer has been set to this year, next time around we may be seeing some colour, even if it’s us and not mother nature that brings it.
