The Trend: The Highlight Intrigue

The color of my hair can be described as a motley of browns. It’s mostly a deep brown of the darkest variety, often confusing those of afar for black. Around the top, there are gentle streaks of honeyed brown. I can give thanks for the richness of their color to the sun’s rays. Near the ends of my hair, a coffee brown resides, as if lightened by the wear and tear of both hair ties and bobby pins.

All of this, of course, can only be seen after much close inspection, which I often do rigorously. You see, despite the variety of hues, I have grown quite tired of the browns. I have lived with them my entire life. Never changing, except once and to a natural black, which people think is the original color of my hair anyways. And it was a semi-permanent dye. After a couple of washes, the browns resurfaced.

My hair’s virginity is partly due to my cowardice. What if something goes wrong? What if it’s ugly? What if my hair falls out? What if? What if? Frozen within “what ifs,” I am stuck with the boredom of the browns. Also, I spent my childhood and teen years confined within Catholic school, where uniforms were required and all colors other than black, brown, blond or red were strictly forbidden. And what can I say? I was a “good girl” who followed the rules.

Well, it seems as if my urge for color has not died out. Especially when I walk around the New School’s campus and see locks in vibrant red, bold blue and even electrifying green. Is it the New School’s free and creative spirit that drives its students to such hair artistry? Or is it New York City’s nonconformist nature? Maybe it’s a little of both.

Crazy hair color has been seen quite frequently among celebs such as Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga.

However, NYC has been sporting colorful highlights. There has been a growing trend of vivid strands in rainbow colors either on the top front, sides or bottom half of the head.

This trend is also pretty simple to do on one’s own. Since it is only highlights, you simply section off the parts of your hair that you would like colored. Be aware that if your hair is too dark, you might have to bleach it first so that the color will take.

Give it a try! Let me know how everything goes.
