Wrapped up in a fairytale with Athena Procopiou

The scarf still remains an underrated accessory. Scarves have the ability to be the missing piece in an outfit’s fashionable puzzle, adding a silky stylish flair to a previously incomplete look. The scarf is no longer just an item of practicality worn as a defense mechanism against the sharp winter wind; it is an item of versatility. They can be tied onto handbags for a flutter of the unexpected, tied in a variety ways on the neck to portray a particular mood or execute a particular look, and they’re available in a range of materials so that there’s a scarf for every season.

Athena Procopiou (athenaprocopiou.com), a 2003 Central St Martins graduate, is making her mark successfully in the scarf world, designing lightweight scarves in delicious hues that tell a whimsical tale. In addition, with the awkward summer to autumn fashion period approaching a little sooner than we’d like, a lightweight scarf will become a seasonal transition hero.

Scarf by Athena Procopiou

Procopiou, of Greek descent, fuses her previous artistic training (she studied History of Art at Christie’s in Paris and graphic deign at Central St Martins) and her childhood laced with fairytales to create these beautiful pieces. Her second collection, in which she has also designed kimonos, sees her influenced by David Bowie’s Ziggie Stardust phase; most of the scarves exhibit galactic scenes that when looked at, drawn one into the far away land, momentarily. Nevertheless, one must act quickly in order to get your hands on a Procopiou scarf, as some styles have already sold out on net-a-porter. This is one fairytale I’d like to be wrapped up in.
