Triple threat: Paris street style
Sapphic love in Citta Bella
The story in Dwayne Foong‘s shoot for Malaysian magazine Citta Bella is all told through the proximity of the protagonists. In the opening shot they’re across opposing sides of the room, but their body language speaks of a wordless sensuality and sexual tension. The ‘courtship’, as the photographer tags it, deepens as the shoot goes on, turning into a physical relationship.
Away from the Sapphic storyline created by Foong, the styling by Sun Khiew projects a youthful kind of glamour. Cutaways, crop tops and graphic prints on bodycon dresses all contribute to the mood while the hair by Siew Keng and makeup by Gavin Soh are at their best when they’re most classic: vintage inspired waves and red lips add drama to our protagonists’ love affair.
Starring models Christina and Svetlana with Base model management, you can view the full shoot by Dwayne Foong at the gallery above.
Knee high boots: why knee high is back, and thigh high is out
If we exclaim that knee high boots are back, you might question whether they ever actually went anywhere. After all, how many women’s winter wardrobes don’t house at least a pair? And it’s not as if the major shoe houses stopped making them, right?
But when something becomes a classic that endures year after year, that doesn’t mean it can’t also experience a revival. What we’re talking about is the humble knee-high boot not just as something you pull on when you want a fail-safe classic look but as something fashion-forward, as something that swept the runways. As a fall 2012 fashion trend.
So we admit that the knee-high boot may not have gone anywhere as a classic, but it sure has been laying low as a fashion item. Replaced, in 2009, by the liberation of the high-high boot into the mainstream and the polar opposite success of the ankle boot. For several years the knee-high boot was deemed too boring to be worn with bare legs and skirts, when the ankle or thigh-high options were so much more fresh and exciting.
But fashion is cyclical and we start to miss those things that have been lying at the back of the wardrobe neglected. We want to dust them off and give them new life. To do that, designers in fall 2012 looked to interesting ways to give detail and flair to the knee high boot.
While rule is strong word, and rules are always made to be broken, there was a general pattern on the runway of how knee-high boots were being presented for fall 2012. If the weather allows it: with stockings, tights, or pants, wear ankle boots. With bare legs, wear knee-high boots. Bar for some exceptions (like Gucci and Givenchy, whose outfits of pants tucked knee-high boots were opulently Gothic), the key way to wear the style this year and into next year isn’t the traditional jodhpur equestrian look. Instead it’s about bare knees or bare upper thighs; a tough yet sensual marriage of masculine and feminine.
The key style of knee high boot in fall 2012 is the cavalry boot. It’s not quite a thigh-high but it doesn’t stop below the knee, either.
Look for styles that are cut higher in the front, either with a separate panel rising up to cover part of the knee, or with a gentle curve from back to front.

A few designers changed up the mood of the knee high boot by adding volume around the bottom, between the toe and the ankle. The end result looks something akin to horse-riding half chaps, or gaiters. Traditionally a separate accessory, Givenchy had their gaiters stitched into the boot as part of its construction.

Giving the equestrian boot a sexier twist for fall, designers like Gucci and Tommy Hilfiger went for fitted, curved shapes with traditional zip and button closures – and the addition of a high heel. Forget the overly fetishist, 6 inch interpretations, though; these were pared back to a manageable and elegant level.

The addition of a military strictness was tightly laced into a number of pairs of fall 2012 boots. Forgo the chunky platforms, and instead opt for a sturdy high heel and high quality leather.

With not a dull runway moment for the knee high boot, it also appeared in cut-away versions. Herve Leger’s gladiator style boots showed plenty of calf, while Anthony Vaccerello’s did the opposite.

Fur, ponyhair, reptile leather… if in doubt as to how to pick a pair of knee high boots that stands out and makes a statement, look to highly textured pairs. McQueen’s buckled, metal-tipped and furry versions added volume to the right part of the legs and worked well with knees kept bare.

With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. 5 Rules of a Well-Rounded Closet
The cornerstone of having great style is having a well-rounded closet. Who knew closets had the capacity to be well-rounded? A true style genius is never too narrow or too wide with their options. Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, what do they have in common? They are fashion icons. Why are they renown style goddesses long after their prime? Their timeless, classic, and unique looks. Being classic doesn’t equal dressing like a mom. Being classic also doesn’t mean wearing Ralph Lauren and Jcrew until your preppiness seeps from your pores. Having classic style means looking chic but updated, individualistic but immortal. So you’re ready to take the plunge and become an icon? The way I see it, the rules are simple. First,
1. Invest in staple items
I stole a grey-blue, long sleeved button down from my mom a few years ago that she had saved from the 80’s. It is arguably my favorite shirt. It’s simple, it goes with everything, and it’s classy with a pair of slacks but trendy with a pair of high waisted jean shorts and wedges. It is a true staple. Purchasing staple items such as button downs, great fitting jeans, and little black dresses are things that will last forever. The key is to avoid trends when purchasing staple items – staple items are meant to look timeless regardless of the times.
2. Trendy ‘Pieces’
Add trend to your wardrobe in pieces. A classic look with a flare of trend updates a boring ‘mom-esque outfit into an updated, chic look. Wear a blazer instead of a cardigan. Find a great pair of shoes to go with your go-to Saturday afternoon dress. Too much trend can look cheap and overwhelming.
3. Avoid Labels
This seems like an oxymoron to having a great style but it is so true. A real chic woman never brags about her Hermès Birkin Bag that is seemingly label-less. Great fashion doesn’t need a label to be great. Furthermore, there are replicates to every label.
4. A Go-To Bag
A classic leather bag never goes out of style. If you prefer black, go for black. If you prefer brown, go for brown. Leather can be pricy but a great bag can last forever. Refer back to rule number three when deciding on a bag. A classic bag can complete a classic look.
5. Leopard Print
Leopard may seem a bit trendy, but pieces of leopard print add flare to any outfit. A leopard print pair of flats or a skinny belt with a seemingly plain ensemble adds just enough to be trendy. Limit leopard to one piece per outfit. Leopard print when it’s tight, colored, or too much, is indeed, too much.
Remember, a well-rounded closet never has too much or too little. The key is to let yourself shine through your own personal style while remaining effortlessly timeless in doing so. May the force be with you, style divas!

Summer Short Do’s for You!
James Madison University
Looking to make a change this summer? With all this hot weather, a new haircut may be just what you need to shake up your style and turn over a new leaf! Check out some of these short do’s:
This summer cut is ideal for women with angular faces. The tousled look can be very sexy and strong.
This short, choppy cut is ideal for rounder faces. It gives a playful nature to the face, and gives one a more youthful, bubbly appearance.
This longer short do is perfect for women with oval faces. The little bit of extra length helps frame the face, while the choppy layers add body and flair.
This more edgy look is for those that dare to be different. Asymmetrical cuts are super trendy these days. They’re normally accompanied by wild colors, but selecting a bright auburn (as pictured) matures the look a bit.
The stacked bob is a summer staple. It’s perfect for almost anyone. The shorter cut in the back elongates the neck, while the longer front helps frame the face. If you’re uncomfortable with going short, this is a safe option for you to try out before going all out.
