Fashion’s Night Out—The Dos & Don’ts

Now that summer vacation is over, many students have nothing else to look forward to but Thanksgiving and other small breaks. In New York, however, we have something much more. It’s Fashion Week, a time when all of the designers come together to show what they have been working on all year. During this time, the city is filled with celebrities, supermodels and fabulous parties.

The week begins with Fashion’s Night Out, started by the fashion goddess, Anna Wintour, to make fashion accessible to mass audiences. On Fashion’s Night Out, retailers throughout the city throw parties and promotions to bring in customers. If Fashion Week is the Olympics than Fashion’s Night Out is the opening ceremony.

There are so many fun events happening that, for a newcomer, it can be very overwhelming. But here is a list of Dos and Don’ts to make this night easy and fun.

DO-Plan Ahead

Know where you’re going and map out your journey accordingly. It is really easy to be over ambitious and try to go everywhere; but remember, the MTA can be very unpredictable. So it may be hard going from one end of the city to the other. Fashionsnightout.com is very helpful and will be beneficial to your planning. You want to find a general area and theme that appeals to you and hang out there. Otherwise you will end the night feeling like you have got nothing accomplished.

DON’T-Go to SOHO

SOHO is economical when factoring in time and the number of events. But it is the most obvious location; and the sacrifice is larger than the reward. Most people make this mistake but regret it as soon as they ascend from the subway. The streets are more crowded than usual and everyone’s behavior is completely obnoxious. On this day, the neighborhood is also not very safe. With high agitation, many fights break out as well as pick pocketing.

 DO-Go to the Majors

And by “Majors,” I mean Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman. These stores have the best events and are totally VIP scale. You can rub shoulders with your favorite celebrities while taking part in awesome contests. There is so much to do in each store you won’t feel the urge to leave because you think you are missing out somewhere else. These events are also good for networking. Many editors, stylists, publicists, and other fashion related people will be in attendance. A casual setting is the perfect ambiance to strike up a conversation with someone who could get you on the path on your dream career.

DON’T-Over Dress

Although this is very much a fashion event and you want to dress to impress, keep in mind that Fashion’s Night Out is casual and not the prom. Leave the uncomfortably tight clothes and towering stilettos at home. You will be walking and standing on your feet for most of the night. Comfort is key but that does not mean looking frumpy. Here are some examples of how one should dress:

DO-Have Fun

Enjoy your night; don’t ruin it by trying to be something you are not. Fashion is supposed to be fun and this night is meant to celebrate that. Make memories not enemies.
